It’s a quiet Friday morning in Westchester as the sun begins to rise. The city is still waking up, but Columbus's weight room is already bustling with activity. Music plays loudly, barbells clang against the racks, and athletes are lifting weights they thought were impossible just weeks ago. Leading this effort is Kerry Thompson, Christopher Columbus’s new strength and conditioning coach.
As one of the nation’s most successful high school athletic programs in recent years, Columbus has welcomed an addition that emphasizes discipline, leadership, and intensity. Coach Thompson aims to cultivate a culture across all athletic programs that utilize his weight room, one that fosters success in postseason competitions.
Background
Before arriving in South Florida, Thompson worked as the assistant director of football sports performance for the University of Southern California (USC), a competitive football program that has finished in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings three times in the past six years. Prior to his role at USC, Thompson served as the associate athletic director of sports performance at Alabama State University, where he contributed to the program's success in winning 10 conference championships during his tenure.
On his philosophy inside the weight room:
"Discipline and structure is above everything else. Building a culture within the program starts with the weight room," Thompson said.

Impact
Although the school year is just beginning and very few sports teams have competed, Coach Thompson's energy and influence are already evident throughout the athletic program. Damien Harvey, a freshman, shared his thoughts on Thompson's effect on his mindset:
"A lot of coaches, they won't want you to lift as much weight as you could, but Coach Thompson pushes you to a point where, "You can do this weight. You can try and do this weight. You will be able to do this weight," said senior varsity football defensive lineman Damien Harvey.
Members of various athletic teams, including cross country runner Liam Gatcliffe, have observed the influence of Thompson. Thompson has inspired team members to approach weightlifting sessions with increased determination and confidence in their ability to lift heavier each week while maintaining proper technique.
Dave Dunn, Columbus varsity football head coach, called Thompson a “taskmaster, [an] attention to detail type strength and conditioning coach.”
Working Toward Success
It does not matter if the athlete is a linebacker striving to gain more muscle, a cross-country runner refining leg strength for race day, a sprinter gaining explosiveness, or a baseball player working on arm strength; Coach Kerry Thompson is willing to train teams with intensity and structure, fostering accountability and a distinct culture.
More importantly, the coach provides athletes with something they say holds more weight than muscle: a sense of leadership and discipline that is retained after the buzzer sounds, the whistle is blown, and the weights are reracked.
"Strength and conditioning is what I do. But people are what God put me on the planet to connect with, and help them figure out life, give them great advice. I think that's my purpose. And I get to walk in that every day and I couldn't be more grateful for it," Thompson said.
