It’s been cold, but the Explorers have dominated on every front. From blowouts in basketball to wins in weightlifting, there’s been plenty of action for Explorer Nation.

Columbus Basketball on a Hot Streak
Beginning last Thursday, the Explorers basketball team has really proved why they are the best. This was their Senior Night matchup versus our neighbors at Florida Christian School. There was a slow start to the game, but ultimately, Columbus powered through to the very end. The final score was 103-58, spearheaded by UM signee Caleb Gaskins, who had 40 points.
On Saturday, January 31st, the Explorers matched up against Miami Country Day High School. The boys from the beach made a valiant effort but should’ve been more prepared. Columbus once again was able to pull through in the second half, outscoring the Spartans by 21 points in the third and fourth quarters. The Explorers took the victory 78-53.
On Thursday, February 6th, the Columbus Explorers won a neutral playoff game against Hialeah Gardens by a score of 95-33. As opposed to the Florida Christian game, Columbus dominated from the very beginning. That hot start of 28 points in the first quarter carried into the second, where they’d score one more point than Hialeah scored the entire game!
Overall the Explorers basketball team has been playing extremely well lately, with team leader in points, rebounds, and blocks Caleb Gaskins averaging almost a double-double with 21.4 points and 9.1 rebounds. Great things are up ahead for the Explorers, who currently stand at 20-6, but for now all eyes are on their next game against the Doral Academy Firebirds, who currently sit at 18-8.
Explorer Nation, keep an eye out because the date is currently TBD. You wouldn’t want to miss us taking home the district’s trophy.
Explorers Soccer: Playoff Preview
Last week Monday, January 26th, was an unfortunate loss against Doral Academy. Senior Jaden Glasper was able to knock one in for a final score of 2-1.
This Friday, February 6th, the Explorers had a playoff match against the Coral Glades Jaguars at FIU Soccer Field. The Explorers currently have a 13-4-5 record compared to the Jaguars, who have been fairly dominant as well, considering their 11-7 record.
The comparison didn’t seem to be of much meaning, though. The Explorers scored 3 in the first half and 2 in the second. Their defensive presence was excellent, with goalkeeper Nick Siman only having to stop one shot on goal—and of course he made the save. Jorge Gonzales-Tello led the squad with 2 goals, while Ezequiel Bartra, Christian Tamargo, and Santi Montoya all had one of their own.
As they are off to a phenomenal start, the Explorers are extremely excited for what is to come in this playoff season.
Weightlifting Takes the Win
On Wednesday, February 5th, Columbus Weightlifting officially held their opening meet. They hosted Somerset Silver Palms and Cooper City in our very own facility.
Across ten weight classes and two lifting categories, Columbus Weightlifting had 14 individual winners, with some even winning both categories!
“We had a record 45 weightlifters representing our school, and I'm very proud of each one of them. I was especially proud of the hospitality our boys showed to our visitors. Those guys felt good here at Columbus, and the Marist charism was in full display.” Coach Machado.
Overall, we are very proud of our Explorers, what they've accomplished, and what they will continue to do for the rest of the season.
