Columbus Explorers Kick Off the New School Year at Annual Beach Bash

Students describe the first week of school for Columbus Explorers as a memorable experience. Throughout the week, there is a sense of anticipation among students for a notable event: Beach Bash. This event, held annually on the first Friday of the school year, provides an opportunity for students to celebrate school spirit, reconnect with friends, and create new memories.
This year's Beach Bash, held on Aug. 21, served as a sendoff for the Class of 2027 while welcoming the Class of 2030 into a tradition that will continue in the future. Each year, the senior class introduces incoming freshmen to the significance of school spirit and the importance of this event for the Explorer Nation. For seniors, the event holds particular significance as it represents one of their last opportunities to participate in Beach Bash before passing the tradition on to the younger classes.
“Beach Bash has always been a great opener to the new school year, it's a bittersweet moment with it being my last but I'm glad I was able to attend and see everyone together at one final and memorable Beach Bash” said senior Daniel Hernandez.
Beach Bash Highlights
Beach Bash features music DJed by students, large crowds, food trucks and various games. These elements contribute to an engaging atmosphere where attendees can enjoy themselves and meet new people. Students from different schools also participate, providing opportunities for interaction across various groups. The event is organized by the Student Association Committee (SAC) and Christopher Columbus High School, whose collaborative efforts help make the event possible each year.
“The thing I enjoyed most at the Beach Bash was hanging out with my friends from other schools and really vibing out with the music they were playing,” said Miami Arts Studio senior Emily Carrodeguas.
One of the biggest traditions at Beach Bash is the clothing students wear to represent their grade and school. Students from various schools wear distinctive tie-dye shirts in their respective colors, such as green for St. Brendan and purple for Lourdes, as part of their senior traditions. These outfits symbolize school pride and contribute to traditions that students hope will continue for years to come.
“Wearing my green Tie-dye shirt helps show my school spirit by connecting with others to create a community that will be remembered,” said St. Brendan senior Taylor Yanez.
Beach Bash is an event that showcases school spirit among students at Columbus. Explorers participate by wearing their school colors and beach-themed attire. The enthusiasm of the crowd and the variety of clothing reflect the diverse ways students express their connection to their school.
Freshmen play a significant role in Beach Bash as they step into this tradition. For many, the event serves as an opportunity to forge new friendships and reconnect with peers from middle school and other institutions. Attending Beach Bash during their freshman year often becomes a memorable experience, marking the beginning of their journey at Columbus.
“Beach Bash was so fun, I was hanging out with all my friends and just made memories I will probably never forget,” said freshman Juanpablo Rodriguez Deshon
Beach Bash has evolved over the years at Columbus, but one element remains constant: the excitement and conversation that fill the halls during the first week of school. The joy of making new friends, reconnecting with old ones and celebrating school spirit persists each year.
