Here at Columbus, school pride has always been a big part of student life. Years ago, athletes, mainly football players, were allowed to wear their team jerseys on game days, a tradition that many current students don’t even know existed. Today, athletes are limited to wearing team polos instead.
Although the jersey tradition ended years ago, interest in bringing it back remains strong. 94.2% of students surveyed said they would support the return of game day jerseys. That percentage is significant because it shows almost unanimous agreement among those asked, not just a small majority. Even more impressive is that all of these students never experienced the tradition themselves, yet still believe it would strengthen school spirit.

Game day jerseys did more than change appearance, they created excitement. Seeing athletes dressed for games reminded students that something important was happening after school. It built anticipation and may have even increased attendance at games. Jerseys symbolized pride in representing Columbus.
Traditions shape school identity. If nearly 95% of surveyed students support bringing back game day jerseys, including many who never experienced the tradition, it may be worth reconsidering. Sometimes bringing back the past can help strengthen the present.
