Pressure Is the Price of Growth: Why Competitive Clubs Are Worth the Stress
By Diego Rodriguez Deshon
The debate surrounding high school extracurriculars often hinges on a single question: Do competitive clubs create more stress or more opportunity for teenagers?
Critics frequently highlight packed schedules, intense expectations, and tight deadlines, arguing that these environments cause more harm than good, especially through anxiety and burnout. However, viewing stress strictly as a negative factor ignores a fundamental reality: meaningful opportunity rarely exists without pressure.
"Late nights are tough, but learning to manage stress now builds character. Pressure is just part of the process," Said senior Eduardo Gutierrez
Participating in extracurriculars whether a competitive club or a sport mentally prepares students for real-world pressure far better than relying solely on textbook assignments. Stepping outside of routine academics shapes character and sets individuals apart from the crowd.
The tangible benefits of competitive extracurriculars offer a strong counterargument. According to Gitnux.org, students who refrain from participating in extracurricular activities hold an average GPA of approximately 2.4. In contrast, students who stay involved maintain an average GPA of 3.0 and boast a 15% higher chance of attending college.
"Clubs force you to manage your time. When you stop procrastinating, your grades actually stay higher," Said senior Ryan Bernal
Beyond academic measures, the personal development gained in these settings is significant. According to ZipDo.co, 65% of students involved in extracurricular activities report improved confidence and leadership skills as a direct result of their participation.
Competitive clubs are not stress-free and are definitely not easy resume padders. High school serves as a crucial training ground where students can practice handling real-world hardship and deadlines. When teenagers learn to navigate and manage that pressure, the long-term opportunities will outweigh the temporary strain that is to come, leaving them better prepared for college, careers, and life.
"Leading in a club gives you real confidence. It proves you can handle pressure when it matters," Said senior Caden Artola
The pressure that they would amount to will make them into diamonds and be able to do anything in their way.
