Summer 2024 brought multiple sequels and remakes, but also brought original stories. Below, please find my top 5 films of the 2024 Summer.
5. Inside Out 2
Now named the highest-grossing animated film of all time, surpassing Frozen 2 (2019) . Inside Out 2 proves that not all recent sequels are senseless cash grabs. Coming nine years after the original, Inside Out 2 balances its previously tackled heavy themes of anger and sadness, but now with a touch of puberty tackling anxiety and envy. Inside Out 2 follows the five main emotions being "bottled up" to make room for four new negative emotions. The film keeps the same charm as the first but isn't afraid to push in more mature themes as Reilly, the main character grows up. The Inside Out films now can properly be sent off to potentially be one of the better Pixar trilogies.

4. Twisters
Surprisingly spectacular? Yes, following a huge blockbuster name like Twister (1996) is a big deal seen through legacy sequel fails like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) and successes like Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Twisters knows exactly what it should be: a fun and over the top summer blockbuster. With a cast full of future A-listers like the already huge Glenn Powell (Anyone But You) along with up and coming big names like Daisy Edgar-Jones (Fresh), Anthony Ramos (Hamilton), Brandon Pereira (Nope), and David Corenswet (Superman: Legacy). Along with the talented cast is the underlining soundtrack followed by its amazing disaster sequences, Twisters (2024) proves itself as a worthy follow up to the iconic 1996 classic.

3. Hit Man
Although debuting in the 2023 Venice International Film Festival in September, the film was picked up by Netflix and put in limited screening in May 2024 and released on the streaming platform June 6, 2024. The film follows a college professor whose part time job as a fake hitman in police stings ignites a chain of trouble when he falls for a potential client. Directed and written by Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused) starring Glenn Powell (Twisters) and Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim: Uprising), this fun and based on a true story, film has clever raunchy moments that shine through out. The cast bounces off of each other flawlessly and the stakes feel high when needed, the film just feels so cohesive and fun. A worthy watch if you're looking for something engaging and hilariously suspenseful.
Box-office - $5,265,220
Score - 8.5/10
2. Deadpool and Wolverine
Deadpool and Wolverine's long-awaited entrance into the MCU came at a "bit of a low point" but proved that the MCU still has potential. Director and writer Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) demonstrated that the MCU was in dire need of a risky and raunchy film. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reunited after X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). Although the MCU still has plot holes to address, Deadpool and Wolverine not only delivered a fitting tribute to the 20th Century Fox X-Men universe (with a banger soundtrack) but also introduced mutants to the MCU. With the film now being the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, surpassing Joker (2019), it shows that Marvel just needs to create projects that resonate with audiences. Now, we’ll just have to wait and see what the MCU has in store for these two if they return.

1. Alien: Romulus
Released August 16, 2024 and following Alien: Covenant (2017) the Alien franchise has solidified itself as one of the best horror/sci-fi movie series of all time. Alien: Romulus proves this even further; the Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe) directed and written project stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) and David Jonsson (Rye Lane) and follows a group of young space colonizers coming face to face with the most terrifyingly clever life form in the universe. The film succeeds in carrying the Alien name and proves itself as a horrifying and picturesque eighth installment in the franchise. Alien: Romulus is possibly the best horror film of 2024 so far and will possibly stay that way until the end of the year.
Box-office - $118,700,000
Score - 9.5/10
(Reminder that most of these box-office scores will rise especially if the film is recently released)
