The Faith and Mission program at Columbus has grown into an initiative that extends beyond campus, aiming to impact students’ lives in meaningful ways. The revamped program focuses on expanding student involvement and continuing to make Jesus Christ known and loved.
Although the transition has been significant for the school, Director of Faith and Mission Eric Pino has played a key role in guiding its continued development.
“The change actually happened before I took the position,” Pino said. “When the school opened the application window, they wanted to rebrand the department to represent more than just the campus.”
Faith and Mission
While the program has evolved, its name reflects a broader purpose beyond a traditional religious program.
“The ‘faith’ part has always been present, even with Campus Ministry, but the word ‘mission’ suggests that faith should guide where the school is going,” Pino said. “It means making sure that faith is considered when decisions are made and that it acts as a compass for our community.”
Vision and Direction
The program continues to move toward a more student-centered approach, with an emphasis on student leadership.
“Student leadership is very important. We use something called peer ministry, where students minister to other students,” Pino said. “People often relate more to someone their own age who understands what they’re going through. When students lead, it becomes more meaningful and relatable.”
The impact is reflected in participation. In the first-year class of more than 450 students, over 200 have attended a religious retreat this year.
Peer minister Diego Ramirez said the experience has been rewarding.
“Leading so many students on retreat is incredible,” Ramirez said. “I feel like I see new faces every time I go and lead.”
Growth
The Faith and Mission program emphasizes living out faith through both belief and action.
“I don’t want that cross to just be a symbol,” Pino said. “I want it to reflect the reality of our school community.”
Pino said students are encouraged not only to learn about their faith but to demonstrate it through their actions.
“As Saint Francis once said, ‘Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary, use words,’” Pino said. “That means showing faith through actions, respect, kindness and how we treat each other.”
The Future
The Faith and Mission department continues to expand at Columbus, with goals of increasing participation in retreats and faith-based events while encouraging students to carry their spiritual growth beyond school.
“Ultimately, my goal is for students to stay connected to faith throughout their time at Columbus and even after they graduate,” Pino said.alumni."
