The latest chapter of the Florida State-Miami rivalry unfolded on Saturday, with Miami taking home the victory by a score of 28-22. This is the first time the two schools have entered the contest both ranked since 2016 when the #8-ranked Seminoles defeated the #20-ranked Hurricanes 20-19. With this newest win, UM extends its lead in the all-time series against FSU to 37-33. This is UM's first road win of the season and their third-ranked one.
Miami's offensive line held its ground, allowing QB Carson Beck to throw for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Freshman receiver Malachi Toney caught seven passes for 107 yards for the Canes. CJ Daniels also added 78 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Florida State's Thomas Castellanos threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions, both leading to scoring drives for Miami. FSU also lost a fumble. Florida State has had trouble with turnovers as of late, as they also turned the ball over three times in their loss against Virginia. They were once again sloppy this week, and Miami was able to capitalize.
Miami led 28-3 heading into the fourth quarter when Castellanos connected with tight end Randy Pittman and wide receiver Lawayne McCoy for a pair of touchdown passes. The Seminoles also added a field goal to make it a one-score game with under a minute to go. They then attempted the onside kick but were ultimately unable to recover.
After the game, Miami rose to the second spot on the AP poll, while Florida State barely hung on, dropping to 25th place. Miami now has a week of rest as it goes into its second bye week of the season. Florida State looks to get things back on track as they hosts Pittsburgh on Saturday.
