Nicholas Heyna was nominated for Miami Herald Athlete of the Week after his stupendous performance during the GMAC Championship against MAST Academy. The Columbus water polo goalie played a great game, denying 13 shots on the Explorers, giving the team an 11-10 victory.

“I’m honored to have been nominated for Athlete of the Week. It reflects not only my hard work but the hard work and effort put in by the rest of Columbus water polo which helped to win GMACs,” said Nicholas Heyna.

GMAC Final Vs. MAST

Columbus played a game that will forever be remembered, with Nicholas Heyna making school history. Columbus hasn't won a GMAC championship since people can't remember. Columbus played a very strong MAST team with players that played for the SEZ team (Southeast Zone) club team.

Heyna was a key player in the game. In the last second of the game Columbus was up by 1 and in hope for a last attempt one of their players shot the ball to the top left corner but Heyna denied the goal and gave Columbus the win.

The Coach

“With only a year and 3 months playing this sport, Nicholas Heyna has surprised his friends and rivals by giving his all in every game. Making great saves when his team needed it most was fundamental for our school to win the GMAC, which was a first in school history," said Water Polo Coach Manolo.
