On Thursday, April 23, the Explorers varsity volleyball team faced Coral Gables Senior High School on its home floor for the district championship and, more importantly, the opportunity to continue its pursuit of a state title.

Boasting a 22-5 record, the squad has dominated throughout the season, winning many matches in just two sets and rarely allowing opponents the opportunity to mount a comeback. However, the district championship presented the team’s biggest challenge so far, and the prospect of watching the Explorers compete on a larger stage created plenty of excitement as fans eagerly packed the bleachers.

As the match began, the Explorers’ skill was on full display. They battled through a competitive first set before pulling away late to secure a 25-19 victory and take an early lead.

After several kills from seniors Lucas Riva and Daniel Rubi, the match began to slip out of the Cavaliers’ hands and firmly into the control of the Explorers. Columbus dominated the second set, cruising to a commanding 25-12 win.

“I always make it a point to give everything when I’m out on the floor for this team,” senior and New York University commit Lucas Riva said. “All the sets these guys give me are why I’m able to get so many kills and succeed.”

After suffering an injury during last year’s playoffs, Riva is determined to bounce back and give everything he has in pursuit of a state championship.

“We all want it,” Riva said. “And to have the opportunity to work for it and succeed is exciting.”

The Explorers carried that same energy and determination into the final set. They fended off a late push from Coral Gables and closed out the match with a 25-22 victory to secure the district championship - the first since 2016.

“I think that game fully encompasses who we are as a team,” senior Daniel Rubi said. “We’re able to win when the pressure’s on, and we know how to fight through adversity.”

When pursuing a state championship, a team’s mentality is just as important as its conditioning and skill. How does a team respond when it is trailing and the game seems out of reach? How does it stay focused when it appears to be dominating? Those questions often define postseason success, and this team continues to answer them with discipline, composure and determination.

With a dominant district championship performance behind them, Columbus volleyball is just getting started on its journey toward a state title, guided by the same focus and drive that has carried the team all season.

The team faces Palmetto tonight at 7:30 p.m. to continue their states push.
