On March 19, the Business Department held the annual Carricarte Award Ceremony. This event is a celebration of the Columbus Business Department students, run by Mr. Santa Maria, the department leader. All of the business organizations recognize certain members for their involvement in the club, qualification competitions, competition winners and most notably, the seniors earn their cord of distinction to walk out on their graduation.

The Ceremony

The Ceremony began with Mr. Santa Maria welcoming the Columbus Business Department and Brian Carricate and Mike Carricarte of the Carricarte Family. Following that, there was a prayer for the Business Department and an introduction to the Business Teachers at Columbus.

Mr. Carricarte's Speech

Mr. Carricarte, Sr., a businessman who created one of the largest health and life insurance companies in the Americas, graduated from Columbus in 1959 and spoke a bunch of topics with the young men in attendance.

He gave examples of how when he was at the University of Miami what made the difference was not who you were but the people you hung out with. He also gave the example about visions and how visualizing your future was very important and that most importantly he wants people to leave a legacy at Columbus and have the student's name on something in the school.

His main message was that if you have C’s or not doing as great in your classes as others, that does not mean you will certainly fail and that your grades are not an indicator of how you will do in the future. Anyone can be successful if you apply yourself.

The Awards

A variety of awards were given with the Business Club, FBLA and DECA recognizing their officers.

Other awards were given for competitions. Finally, what stood out the most over 50 seniors earned a cord of distinction that the seniors can wear on their graduating ceremony.
